Raffaldini

Monday, March 24, 2008

Our new tradition is hitting a new winery on our way back home through North Carolina. We were a little indecisive on the interstate but the moment exit 73B came up we took it and went to visit Raffaldini

This vineyard is part of the Swan Creek group, the other two being Buck Shoals and Laurel Grey. The sommeliers at Raffaldini are some of the friendliest we have met. They have a new facility for tasting and events perched atop the Vineyard's hill. The view was remarkable, the wine, splendid. Don't let the winding route and distance discourage you from visiting this Vineyard. It is less than ten minutes from the interstate. Sally's favorite: Winemaker's Blend
Curtis's favorite:Sangiovese Riserva.

Easter Trip

Oh the Horror!

Sally and I made another trip to see her mother in West Virginia this weekend. Mom is doing quite well and I have another Easter with the Evans under my belt. A bric-a-brac store provided some enterteinment during our stay. Along with the above nightmare bunny we found other curiosities.

Black Wolf

Monday, December 3, 2007

We hit up Black Wolf vineyards on the way home on Sunday. Quirky little restaurant with wine tasting at your table. We enjoyed a few bottles with a mediocre lunch. The vineyards were beautiful and we caught a glimpse of some kinda fat mammal feasting on the grapes.

This guy was redonkulous. He has burrs on his forehead.
Stuffed animals and other curiosities were a staple of decor at Black Wolf.

Hokie Bird White

Dry white wine. Yum, I am drinking lots of this. It's from Chateau Morrisette, cost: whatever Sally paid. I didn't go to this winery.

The Talbot reservoir

Tuesday, October 9, 2007

Our cabin overlooks the Talbot reservoir. It is the second damn on the Dan rive as it snakes through the Virginia Mountains.

The reservoir is a trout fishing destination and a park. I am not sure what their hours are but they were closed when I went to check them out Saturday afternoon.

They have limited facilities. Meaning, porta-potty and picnic bench.

The dam from the other side.

This is one of my favorite landscapes from the trip and the only time I got the panoramic setting right on my camera.

More to come...

One...more...day....

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Just one more day. That's all I have to make it through and then we leave for the trip.

Got really in the mood last night when I went shopping. I went a little crazy at the grocery store trying to buy various stuff I thought other might enjoy.

I got it in my head that I was going to make salsa to take on the trip. I even went out and bought a cheaper food processor at Target so that I could make it. I ended up making two kinds, Summer Salsa which is red tomato based and Tomatillo Salsa which is Mexican green tomato based. Haven't tried them yet. I needed to let them marinate for a night. J and I will give them a small test run tonight and he can tell me if it needs anything added.

Tuesday

Tuesday, September 25, 2007

Two days until the trip. I am not feeling really excited this morning. For one thing, I am extremely tired. For another, I am dreading going to work today. I have so much to do at work and I have to cram it into the next two days. I just want to head for the mountains. Just go and worry about coming back Monday. Can we leave yet?

On another note, tonight I go grocery shopping and come home to make some edible items for the trip. I will also be working on that and packing tomorrow night as well.

Soon. Soon we will be leaving.

Calming . . . calming . . .

A bad day caused me to have a freakout and reconsider going on the wine trip today. I had some crappiness today, and way too much work, and too much classwork, but I've calmed down considerably. I'm feeling better, and am cautiously looking forward to the trip. I've been excited about it for months, but the last week or so has caused me to worry about getting everything done.

But I really need to get out of town. I've been looking forward to this for a long time, and I'm ready to go.

P.S. I will try to upload some of last year's photos tonight.

I found this looking for photos of the area around Meadows of Dan. This is a nearby forest at Mabry Mill.
